Course overview

The ancient practice of acupuncture, a form of Traditional Chinese Medicine, has become a widely used treatment option in Australia. As a student, you will gain the specialised skills required to become a qualified Acupuncturist. This course combines the principles and philosophy of Chinese medicine theory with Chinese manual therapy practices including acupuncture, moxibustion, medical Qi Gong, and Chinese remedial massage (Tui Na).

Students will develop a thorough understanding of human biology functions, Chinese dietary therapy, Chinese medicine channel systems, musculoskeletal anatomy, and clinical diagnosis and consultation. In addition, students will practice and refine clinic management and decision-making skills that are instrumental to their future careers – all within the protected environment of our student clinics.

This 3-year degree focuses specifically on the practice of acupuncture and will supersede our existing Bachelor of Health Science (Acupuncture) qualification. As this is an entirely new degree qualification, this course will first go through the same rigorous two-year accreditation process with the Chinese Medicine Board of Australia (CMBA) that we have undertaken with all of our other successfully-accredited courses.

Education, product development and media positions are other popular career outcomes for Acupuncture graduates, in addition to clinical practice.

Practical experience

As you progress through your Bachelor of Health Science (Acupuncture), you will gain significant clinical experience at Endeavour College's on-campus teaching clinics under supervision of academics.

CMBA registrants may apply for membership with the following associations:

  • Australian Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine Association Ltd (AACMA)
  • Australian Traditional Medicine Society (ATMS)
  • Chinese Medicine Board of Australia (CMBA)
  • Federation of Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture Societies of Australia Ltd (FCMA).

Postgraduate study pathways: Graduates are also eligible for master degree programs in a variety of related areas.

Career opportunities

Acupuncturists may practice independently as a sole trader, or provide treatment in a multidisciplinary setting. Acupuncturists often work alongside other allied health practitioners such as medical doctors, physiotherapists, osteopaths, chiropractors and naturopaths. Practitioners may choose to focus on particular areas of interest such as women’s medicine, sports medicine, men’s medicine, chronic disease or other areas.

Standard entry

  • Year 12 or equivalent (OP/ATAR score not required).
  • Mature age students (21 years or over) who have not completed Year 12 and who have relevant study, work and/or life experience that indicates ability to manage the level of coursework required.

Evidence requested may include a curriculum vitae (CV) that documents broadly relevant work experience, professional references, evidence of informal or non-formal study that is completed or partially completed, or a written submission demonstrating they are a reasonable prospect for success.

Speakers of English as a second language are required to provide evidence of English proficiency equivalent to a level 7.0 (IELTS) prior to admission to this course.
